![]() ![]() If you’re most comfortable with playing the melody with your index, then you should probably focus on the index lead style, at least at first. Most of my tabs are for Index lead and I use both thumb and index on all five strings, though my thumb usually stays just on strings two, three, four and five. Many 2-finger players mingle both styles in a tune. With index lead, the index finger plays the downbeat/melody notes while the thumb either drones on the 5th string (this is how the first 2-finger players I heard, played) or drops to the inside strings for melodic and rhythmic variety, just like dropthumbing in clawhammer style. Most thumb lead players don’t limit the finger to the first string however, but use the finger on all four long strings to add melodic and rhythmic variety to the tune. In the simplest form of Thumb lead, 2-finger style, the index plays only the first string as a drone. Essentially, this means that depending on the style, either the thumb or the index will be playing the downbeat and therefore, most of the melody notes. Hi, There are two basic 2-finger methods.
